Across the bay from Kadiköy stands the imposing edifice of Haydarpaşa station, looking like nothing so much as a Rhineland castle - not surprising, given that it was a gift from Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany and was designed by German architects. It's the terminus of the Anatolian railway system, the end of the line for trains from as far east as Tehran (serviced by the weekly TransAsya Express). On the waterfront piazza fronting the station is a small but perfectly formed ferry terminal, another Vedat Tek design.
