Kiki (5 stars)

Writer: Çimen Uzsoy

When did you stop visiting your mother for the holidays? Well, if you don’t remember, Kiki can refresh your memory. With its vintage furniture and decoration, and the smell that old houses have, Kiki impacts you right when you walk through the door. A couch at the front, a coffee table and other pieces of furniture make the café look like a ‘guest room’ with plenty of natural light pouring through the windows. The ambience changes as you head towards the back where you’ll find dinner tables, chairs and a bar, which extends into the garden area. In the garden you’ll find trees, coloured lights that are used in the summer months, a perfect and typical arena for the Cihangir crowd. Right next to the bar is the DJ booth and on Wednesdays and weekends local DJs come and spin tunes while parties commence. Just like Sundays at Grandma’s, you can come and enjoy a delicious brunch menu here including incredible varieties of bread and butter, all made fresh by hand. Also, during this economic crisis, the price per person including coffee and tea is a mere 25 TL, not much for food that tastes like it was made at home.  Kiki also features a variety of teas and even has their own brand, which will soon be available. Their menu has many options to choose from, with funky names such as ‘yaz ateşi’ (summer heat), ‘sessizlik ve sakinlik’ (silence and tranquillity) and ‘kikisel karışımlar’ (the Kiki mix). The tea, milk, spices and juices are all prepared by hand. The teas you can choose from are: rosemary, white tea, pussy willow, nettle, French lavender, yarrow, mistletoe, fennel and aniseed. The dinner menu, for fish-lovers, should not be missed. The hors d’oeuvre, soups and salads and main course seafood dishes will be sure to send your mouth into a salivating frenzy. Main menu options include: Orange flavoured whiting, grilled octopus, grilled seafood on a stick (shish), squid wraps and fener casseroles. For those who prefer something other than seafood, Kiki has humus filled eggplant salad, samosas, ravioli and grilled steak. The lunch menu at Kiki also changes daily to provide variety and selection.

From the menu-
Hors d’oeuvre plate: 10TL
Grilled octopus: 12TL
Vegetable lasagne 14TL
Apple pie: 9TL
Kiki teas: 5TL
Mojito: 15TL
