Greek-born artist Dimitris Tzamouranis discusses his work at Suma’s May exhibition.

Writer: Jeff Gibbs

What piece will you be exhibiting at Suma?
I shot a fiction documentary movie titled "The Flood".  The movie documents 7 artists who decide to live and work together in a block of flats in Istanbul. Their goal is to exchange their artistic identity for that of archeologists searching for a lost ancient city in the Aegean Sea. So they take a boat and sail forward to new adventures. This basic story line has a hidden sarcastic critique of the 90's art scene. During the shooting, there was the big earthquake in Istanbul in 1999 that changed the whole work. The effect of this situation turned the pure fiction documentary into a real one about the tragedy of the city.
What do you hope a viewer brings to your work?
Patience.  I hope that the viewer will have an opportunity to have an interesting visual and mental experience. For that, he should be patient.
As an artist, what did you find unique about Istanbul?
In Istanbul, throughout its long and great history, the idea of time has no borders.
